Sorry for the exceedingly tardy reply, I doubt after all this time you will notice, but I'll answer anyway :)

I was also born in Sarfend (well Rochford, which is close enough) and we also moved to Colchester (how's that for a coincidence?), although in my case it was at the age of 5.

I agree there is a lot to enjoy about the scenery, and I have been known to mention the oldest recorded town on occasion, but not being able to get anywhere further West without going on the A14 or down to The Village has left me a bit jaded.

Having gradually moved from slightly larger city to slightly larger city until finally making it to Tokyo, I confess I find the country a nice place to visit, but I don't particularly enjoy living there ;)

I have to ask, where abouts in Essex do you hail from? I grew up in Sarfend, and moved to Colchester when I was about 16. Personally, I love the county - especially the eastern and north-eastern parts - and feel decidedly unapologetic about it. Once you're past the Sharon-and-Tracy bit, you can start talking about the oldest recorded town in England, Boudica, the Battle of Maldon, the Siege of Colchester, the Essex marshes as immortalized in "Great Expectations", the rivers and countryside, and people start saying "oh, I never knew that!"
