Wildlife

It’s official, summer is here, the rainy season is over and the cicadas are out. They’ve been out on campus for nearly a fortnight but today, as one, the ones outside my apartment have appeared. I also found a huge roach inside my wardrobe last weekend, I put pay to that pretty rapidly. It would seem that, although I will step over ants on the footpath, and move snails to one side to save them from being stepped on, my love for my fellow creatures runs out at cockroaches. Cockroaches and mosquitoes. I have left bait in every dark corner, so hopefully that is the one and only cockroach I will have to see!

I went on to the balcony to see if I could find a cicada to show you and instead I found this pretty little guy. The noise you can hear in the background is the aforementioned cicada, we’ll meet him more in a minute. This may actually be some variety of cockroach but as long as it stays outside, we can continue to be friends.
And so, without further ado, on to the star of the show. It took me ages to get this as, having spent all morning singing his little heart out he went unaccountably shy when I wanted to video him. He is, of course, in full voice again outside right now. Can’t see him? Don’t worry, you will :)
Here’s a close up for the portfolio, the camera loves you little fella.

About Nell

I am a researcher in bionanotechnology currently living and working in Tokyo. I moved out here nearly three years ago, against my better judgement but in search of adventure. It has certainly been an adventure and not one I would have missed for the world. I am trying to retrain as a designer and you may see the odd example of my work appear here as I progress. I also indulge in opinionated rambling.
