Getting creative

I said I’d post the various bits and bobs I did for the art course up here. This isn’t my first drawing, but it’s the first that was big enough to be worth posting, the others have all been warm up exercises. It’s a deliberately loose style, as I was drawing with a cotton bud. I’m reasonably pleased with it, but it doesn’t sit on the page very well.

First I drew some guidelines for proportion in pencil, then I painted the reflections in the windows in with masking fluid before drawing the main sketch in sepia ink using a cotton bud.

I added the shadows to the windows with marker pen, I deliberately choose the think pen to go with the rough blocky nature of the drawing done with a cotton bud.

I removed the masking fluid and darkened some areas with more ink.

I drew in details with a black fine liner.

The finishing touches were green pencil on the copper roof and yellow pencil on the areas of lighter brick work.

About Nell

I am a researcher in bionanotechnology currently living and working in Tokyo. I moved out here nearly three years ago, against my better judgement but in search of adventure. It has certainly been an adventure and not one I would have missed for the world. I am trying to retrain as a designer and you may see the odd example of my work appear here as I progress. I also indulge in opinionated rambling.
