It’s going to be a bitty entry today, I was going to talk about Harry Kroto yesterday, but I got side-tracked by Barack Obama, so I’ll get onto that in a moment. Yesterdays post was lots of fun :D, I sent the link to Graham Linehan on Twitter (Glinner) and he read it, called it “very interesting” and posted it for his 30k or so followers to see, I’m still getting the odd retweet. Hullo to anybody who hung around and thanks for all the retweets and complimentary comments, it was lovely to have you and I hope you enjoyed what you found.
I met Harry Kroto on Thursday, as planned. My jet lag was ok and his enthusiasm field really carries you along. His talk was very enjoyable and, I confess, I rather monopolised him during the after party, I hope he and his hosts forgive me! You may remember that, some time ago, I mentioned the Vodafone World of Difference program and how I would like to apply for it and use the funding to work for GEOSET, Harry’s education website. Well, I asked him what he thought about the idea and he seemed positive, all I have to do now is beat the more than 1000 other applicants to get a spot! I was being a bit relaxed about how much I was likely to stand out amid the scores of gap yearers I anticipated making up the bulk of the applicants, but I read the biographies of this years winners and it was humbling*. Several of them were applying to work for charities they had set up themselves and all of them have other extensive charity work in their backgrounds. I still think we have a good chance, I have a fair amount of charity work in my own background, but I’m definitely taking the competition a bit more seriously than I was!
And finally… according to the National Geographic Channel, if Jupiter’s magnetic field was visible from Earth, it would appear larger than the moon. That’s a bit big then.
*No bad thing, I think I needed a bit of cutting back down to size.
