Further Education

or “why I am not an elitist bigot”.

In case you thought my previous post meant I thought a high-level education was something that should be reserved only for the academic elite, I thought I should explain my position a bit more fully.

I think I have mentioned this talk before but I have brought it up again because it says everything you need to know about my opinions on education: particularly the bit at 9.30. It’s funny too :)

It isn’t that I believe there are some people who do not have the smarts for university (as VibratingSky said in answer to yesterday’s post, everyone can get there, it’s just it might take some people a bit longer), rather, there are many people for whom a university education is the wrong pathway.

The best teams are made up from the most diverse groups of people*. The whole of our society is really just one big team, complete with all the cliques, politics and maneuvering on a grand scale. Our diversity is our strength and funneling 50% of the population into the education route set up to produce university professors is to doom many of our brightest stars to failure and to limit our creative potential as a species.

*We like to be with people like ourselves, so they are also the hardest to get to function, but when they do, they are magnificent.

P.S. They idea of all those talented, creative wonderful children being “treated” with class A drugs to make them docile and compliant makes me literally angry with rage!

About Nell

I am a researcher in bionanotechnology currently living and working in Tokyo. I moved out here nearly three years ago, against my better judgement but in search of adventure. It has certainly been an adventure and not one I would have missed for the world. I am trying to retrain as a designer and you may see the odd example of my work appear here as I progress. I also indulge in opinionated rambling.

Ahh, love that video! God bless that chap at rotten Agency.com for showing it to us.

Are you sure there isn’t support available for people with PHDs who want to do masters (like your good self)?

Good lord, count yourself lucky you aren’t an international student – £24,000 p/a! Yikes:

That IS what I have to pay.

” The tuition fee for Home/EU students taking an equivalent or lower qualification is the same as that for Overseas students. In 2009/10 this was £24,000.”

    Am miffed. With bells on.
