Inflatable bin liner art

Joshua Allen Harris makes* sculptures out of bin liners. He arranges them to look like litter discarded on the street but they are attached to subway air vents in the pavement and, when a train goes through underneath, the air pressure inflates and animates the sculpture. Just brilliant. I wish we had pavement level air vents like this in the UK; I’d love to see the faces on the passers by when one of these rises up in front of them. I particularly like the one that looks a bit like Cloverfield.

*or perhaps “made”, none of this is particularly recent and I suspect he may have moved on artistically. Fair enough of course, no artist wants to be trapped doing the same sculpture over and over again (except Antony Gormley perhaps[1]), but a pity none-the-less; I can’t help feeling this idea has some mileage left in it.

1. Oh alright, that’s not fair. His early stuff is quite different and I love the way his “Feeling Materials” series looks like a pencil scribble made 3D, but, enough with the bodies now: srsly, move on!

This is Dalton Ghetti. He makes incredible sculptures from the tips of pencils using only a sewing needle and a craft knife. Like Willard Wigan he works without any magnification. Remarkable.

Happy Everyone Draw Mohammad Day!

Yup, you read that right. If you didn’t know, today has been designated Everyone Draw Mohammad Day. It’s an act of rebellion standing up for free speech in the face of terrorism.

Everyone has the right to believe whatever they wish, but noone has the right to impose those beliefs on others or to limit free speech.

So without further ado, here is my Mohammad. The one on the far left isn’t Mohammad, the one on the far right is. How many of these images are blasphemous? Where do you draw the line?

I’ve finished my art course When I set out to do this, I was very worried I wouldn’t be able to keep all the balls in the air but, as it happened, that turned out out to be the least of my worries. I met a far bigger problem when I got completely blocked at the start of this term and just couldn’t find my mojo. Anyway, I found it again just in time (even after my laptop went fzzzt with 3 days to go) and fingers crossed for a good result. I won’t post everything I submitted this time around because the second semester was a bit esoteric compared to the first but here’s a couple of things that, if I’m not exactly pleased with, do show some evidence of progress.

This is a copy of Hokusai’s Red Fuji made up from little pictures of origami cranes.

See? Cranes.

Is this Mohammad?

I still have some work to do on my portraiture (and everything else besides), but I think this is better than my last attempts. If you only look at the bits above the nose, it’s almost good!

I aim to keep practising, so I should still be putting up the odd piece here and there

Tokyo Metro Manners

There is an ongoing campaign on the Tokyo Metro to gently encourage people to be considerate of their fellow passengers. It’s popular, often amusing, sometimes a bit prim, and not at all effective. The tag line is the innuendo laden “please do it at home”, although they often change the location as appropriate to the action. If anyone can explain to me why this activity is best carried out at the beach, I’d love to know!

As part of my art course this semester I am researching public information posters. Here’s my take on the Tokyo Metro Manners campaign. 15 points to the first person to get the rather obvious homage (click to enlarge).
