About Me

If you found me searching for the lyrics to the children's song, you can find them here.
I am a researcher in bionanotechnology currently living and working in Tokyo. I moved out here nearly three years ago, against my better judgement but in search of adventure. It has certainly been an adventure and not one I would have missed for the world.
I am trying to retrain as a designer and you may see the odd example of my work appear here as I progress.
I also indulge in opinionated rambling.

#15 Sometimes *not* volunteering is the toughest choice
I said in my post of a few days ago that society is stronger than we think, and that when a disaster like The Great Tohoku Earthquake occurs people of all backgrounds come together to help, and I stand by that, … Continue reading

Don’t say goodbye, say au revoir
I have mentioned a couple of times that I felt I was running out of blogging steam and, since March 11th, getting all strident on the internet hasn’t seemed so important. I’m not so foolish as to say “never” but, … Continue reading

#13 Society is stronger than we think
When something like the earthquake (it’s already being called “the great earthquake”) of March 11th happens, politicians and the press are always quick to tell us people are panicking, we must be afraid of looters and that they can’t tell … Continue reading

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!*
**UPDATE 17th March 12.00** Outlets like the Guardian are reporting the FCO are recommending British residents leave Tokyo because of radiation fears. This irresponsible journalism is utterly incorrect fear mongering rubbish. Pay no attention. The truth is that the FCO … Continue reading

#1 – All the most successful blogs have a theme
When I started this blog I was really just writing it for myself. I have never kept a diary; I live very much in the present and writing down what has happened just so I can remind myself of it … Continue reading

What Kraft holes!
Kraft are moving a few key Cadbury jobs to Switzerland so as to avoid paying the UK treasury £60 million in corporation taxes, which is exactly what they did last year with Kraft’s own UK management, so it should have come as no … Continue reading

What? It can’t be that time again already?!
No, you’re right, it isn’t – but it’s not that far off. If you think you know what this is all about, keep schtum. If you don’t have a clue, well you’re just going to have to wait a bit … Continue reading

Standing by my earlier comments
A while ago I wrote a long and angry post about how the (now previous) Government had scrapped funding for equal or lesser qualifications leaving me with an almost impossibly large bill for the course I would like to do. … Continue reading
Strrrong like bull!
Today I went for a routine medical for my new job (which I will be starting on Thurdsay). For the first time in my life, I had an ECG. It wasn’t like on the TV: there were no sticky electrodes, … Continue reading

Ace acety aceington
When I left home for a city 6000 miles away a member of my family (who had to do a similar thing years ago) gave me some advice: she said that, when I came back to visit, I wouldn’t have … Continue reading
